This book of interviews with seventeen women writers from Tamilnadu attempts to chart the complex factors that influence the writing lives of women. Economic necessity, familial politics and the pressures of domestic can cast long shadows on women writers.
For many women writing in Tamil, attaining any sort of writing life is like a miracle, since it is accomplished against the odds of everyday life. Caste, class and ethnicity, and privileges or their lack that accompany them, overlay the identity of gender, leaving other imprints on what we thinck of, rather narrowly, as 'women's writing'.
