This book is addressed to students with diverse backgrounds who are interested in complex analysis mainly for its usefulness to them. The content represents what we consider to be the minimum content that is indispensible alike for mathematicians, mathematical physicists, and scientific engineers.
Since there is little unanimous agreement concerning the foundations of mathematics, in analysis one usually starts with a set of postulates which are by no means universally accepted, and one then proceeds with the further development. We have assumed many facts of real analysis here. In view of the general upgrading of scientific training that has taken place in major institutions throughout the country, the needed subjects are included not only in course of advanced calculus and real analysis, but in undergraduate courses addressed to engineers and physicists. The student not familiar with some of the results referred to can simply accept the statements which are based on these results, and proceed with his study starting from there. In this sense the logical development is self-contained.
The goal in the study of mathematics should be not only the passive learning and aesthetic enjoyment of the subject, but also the ability to use the material in other areas of mathematics, in the creation of new mathematics and in the application of mathematics to other disciplines. We have tried to give a glimpse of the breadth of complex analysis as well as its depth.
