The book provides an integrated approach to finite elements, combining theory, a variety of examples and exercise problems from engineering applications, and implementing the theory incomplete self-contained computer programs. It serves as a textbook for senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students and a learning resource for practising engineers. Problem formulation and modelling are stressed in the book. The student will learn the theory and use it to solve a variety of engineering problems. Features of the Second Edition: new material is added in the areas of orthotropic materials, conjugate gradient method, three-dimensional frames, frontal method, Guyan reduction, and contour plotting for quadrilaterals; temperature effect and multipoint constraint considerations have been introduced for stress analysis in solids, and implemented in the computer programs; all the previous computer programs have been revised and several new ones are added; a disk with QUICKBASIC source code programs is provided; FORTRAN, and C versions for Chapters 2 through 11 are also included; and example data files are included.
